As part of Artown and with support from RAD (Regional Alliance for Downtown), Artech and Nevada Fine Arts, Circus Circus Reno is excited to announce an array of exciting additions to the 4th annual 24-Hour Mural Marathon. This year’s event will start at 10 a.m. on July 15 and end at 10 a.m. on July 16, with awards announced on July 16 at 12 p.m.
Since its inception in 2014, spectators have been invited to watch as artists from around the country paint an original mural in a 19’7” wide by 14 feet high panel on the Virginia Street side of Circus Circus Reno in just 24 hours. This year’s event is rolling out some fresh paint – both figuratively and literally – with a revamped and refreshed event, making it better than ever before. Seven incredibly talented artists have been selected to compete for the grand prize of $2,000 but now there’s even more attractions for on-lookers as Virginia Street will be lined with art cars, sidewalk chalk art, food trucks, beverage booths, hula hoopers, art shopping and so much more. Red Bull will have nonstop tunes from their DJ Truck and kids will enjoy face painters, balloons and even Cuddles the Clown. For those that haven’t seen the Playa Art Park yet, costumed stilters, an aerial silk show, Beaupromo puppet show and Controlled Burn fire show will roam the Burning Man art installation area just across from where the muralists are hard at work. Food trucks include Bodawgs, Java Ship Coffee, Slater’s Ding-a-Wing, Island Ice, Kenji’s Food Truck, Lazy Sundae, Bam! Dogs and Ramblin’ Rose.
“The 24-Hour Mural Marathon has a great foundation and we are very excited to take it to the next level, adding it to our repertoire of summer festivals and parties” said Cindy Carano, Executive Director of Community Relations for the Eldorado Resorts Reno properties. “The new additions to this event will create a livelier environment for both our guests and the artists as they power through 24 hours of creative and hard work.”
Based on application and mural concept, a Selection Committee chose the following artists to beautify the side of Circus Circus Reno: Rafael Blanco of Quincy, Calif., Hannah Sproul of Reno, Marv Riley of Austin, Tex., Kendal Leslie of Reno, Anthony Ortega of Sparks, Seth McCorkle of Reno and Stephanie Cellier of Virginia City. Each artist will receive a stipend of $750 for materials and is responsible for his or her own equipment and labor. There are cash prizes for first ($2,000), second ($1,000) and third place ($500). Murals will remain on display for an entire year until the next annual competition occurs.
The selection committee consists of six people from various local business who have a background in and passion for art. Each selection committee member sat down for an entire day to go through over 30 submissions that were received. Artists submission was open from February through April.
Circus Circus would also like to thank Red Bull, Nevada Fine Arts, Artech, Herc Rentals and Ace Hardware for their support of the 24 Hour Mural Marathon. Follow along with the event with #CircusMurals.
