Rex Norman is First Place Winner of the 24-Hour Mural Marathon at Circus Circus Reno
During the grueling 24-hour Mural Marathon Circus Circus Reno hosted in conjunction with Artown, seven artists competed and we have our winners! There were cash prizes for first ($2,000), second ($1,000) and third place ($500).
First place went to Rex Norman, AKA “Killbuck” with his mural of the Strong Man. Second place went to Rafael Lopez called “Jump.” Third place went to Joe C. Rock with his tribute to the Biggest Little City.
The winners were selected by the judges; David Walker, CEO of the Nevada Museum of Art; Eric Brooks, Galleries at Work Administrator Sierra Arts Foundation and curator for Art Spot Reno; Maria Partridge, Artist Advocate at Burning Man; Dave Aiazzi, Chairman of Artown; and Paul Baker Prindle, Director of University Galleries at the University of Nevada, Reno.
All murals will remain on display on the Circus Circus Building for an entire year, until the second annual competition in July of 2015. This will be a welcoming message to all who travel south on Virginia Street and a permanent art installation, which will benefit the community and beautify the downtown area.
All the selected artists who competed were Rafael Lopez, Pan Pantoja, Alex Fleiner, Heather Jones, Joe C. Rock, Rex Norman, Mike Lucido and we selected two alternates in case someone couldn’t make it to the mural marathon, Nate Clark and Dave Cherry.
The competition was 10am on July 13th to 10am on the 14th. The Red Bull truck delivered tunes and we had Taster’s Paradise Food Truck plating up delicious food and creating amazing beverages. A portion of Virginia Street was closed for the event and was a 24-hour show open to any and all viewers. The artists did not disappoint, and with Red Bull keeping them awake, they each created amazing works of art that offer a tremendous variety and amazing art installations for the side of the building.
