Reno Art Fest event aims to continue beautification of The Heart of Reno
RENO, NV (June 21, 2018) – Circus Circus’s 24-Hour Mural Marathon will kick-off a month of celebrating Reno’s budding arts culture with the 5th annual event, June 30 and July 1. As part of Reno Art Fest and with support from Artech and the City of Reno Arts & Culture Commission, the Mural Marathon will challenge seven artists to paint an original mural in a 19’7” wide by 14 feet high panel on the Virginia Street side of Circus Circus in just 24 hours.
The seven incredibly talented artists were selected by an esteemed panel to compete for a grand prize of $3,000, 2nd place prize of $2,000 and 3rd place prize of $1,000. Painting will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and end at 10 a.m. Sunday. Judges will announce the top three paintings at 12 p.m.
“Since the creation of the Mural Marathon in 2014, the City of Reno has seen many efforts to add more art everywhere and it has vastly changed the way the Heart of Reno looks by making it more colorful, more walkable and more photographic, ” said Cindy Carano, Executive Director of Community Relations for THE ROW.
Based on application and mural concept, the Selection Committee chose the following artists to beautify the side of Circus Circus: Nathanial Benjamin (Reno), Bryce Chisolm (Reno), Jamie Diana Darragh (Reno), Marv Riley (Austin), Emily Ding (Friendswood, Tex.), Jenn Ponci (Gold Country, Calif.) and Sebastian Coolidge (Tampa). Each artist will receive a stipend of $750 for materials and is responsible for his or her own equipment and labor. There are cash prizes for first ($2,000), second ($1,000) and third place ($500). Murals will remain on display for an entire year until the next annual competition occurs.
The selection committee consists of five people from various local business who have a background in and passion for art. The committee, which includes Ahren Hertel, Marcio Decker, Matt McIver, Melissa Melero and Mark Salinas, will also pick the top three murals at the event.
Spectators are invited to watch the artists in action while they work and are encouraged to check out other Reno Art Fest events which includes:
